5 Signs That You Should Hire a Doula

Whether you are staring at 2 pink lines, or in your 3rd trimester, you’re planning for your baby’s arrival. You’re going through the list of what needs to be done before your baby arrives. Is a doula on your list? If not, here are some signs that a doula may be someone you need in your birthing space when the time comes.

You are a planner.

Did you hire a wedding planner for your wedding? A specific person that knows the industry to ensure everything went smoothly, and if not, that person was there to do whatever it took to make sure your wishes were carried out to the best of their ability?

That’s what a doula is in the birthing space. She is there with her experience, knowledge, and skill to help support your birthing experience. She is there to enforce your birthing plan, so you don’t have to be on the defense with staff, get ice chips so your partner doesn’t have to leave your side, and doesn’t have to leave your side, there to support and uplift your partner to be the best birthing partner for you. Her skilled eye will be able to assist your partner in helping in ways they may not see for themselves.

While labor and childbirth classes are beneficial, you cannot foresee how things will go or how you and/or your partner will feel or react. In such a vulnerable time, not only do you have the support from your doula, but it also helps take the pressure off your partner to give them time to process while you remain supported by your doula.

You are detailed oriented.

Doctors don’t always take the time to explain to you what and why your body is going through. Google can be misleading. A doula will take the time to educate you about situations that may arise, empower you in the choices you would have to make, and ensure that you are confident in your choices.

You value experience.

As someone who values experience, you may be more comfortable with having someone in your birthing space who has attended multiple births, come across many different scenarios and can help guide you, and your partner through it.

You feel your best when you are supported.

No matter how well-planned you have your birth, birth is messy, and things take their own course. An experienced doula will talk with you prior to labor about different things that may happen and how she will support you through those. Talk about alternative birth plans, and things you may want to be different if things go in a different direction.

Your last birth wasn’t what you envisioned.

While you can’t always control how your pregnancy, labor, and birth may go, hiring a doula can help with being prepared for multiple outcomes. If there was birth trauma, a doula will support you in working through those emotions, help empower you, and be a steady rock to support you.

So how do you decide who is the right doula for you? Interviews are a great time to get to know the doula and see if they are the right fit for you! Remember, your birthing space is a very intimate place to share with someone, so ask as many questions as you need!
